Artwork on vehicles have been around for decades; from painting on them to installing partial to full body wraps. But what if you found yourself needing to wrap a truck? What if that truck had a customized back? So, what if you didn’t have a straightforward template to work with? Well that’s where the fun began.
This particular project we’re throwing back to was something that I had worked on with the team at We Are/Kymera, formerly Mailtropolis + TCreative, in Orlando, Florida. We had some existing artwork from a previous wrap but ultimately what ended up happening was that we still needed to create a custom wrap from essentially scratch. The team gathered measurements of all the areas that were to have the wrap installed onto – from cab down to the sprayer tank itself. We approached the artwork with mockups of each side/area pulled from artwork we assembled flat. The flat artwork once produced on the wide format would be assembled as if a giant puzzle with the finished product as shown. The art was an interesting task to tackle as we created it as one continuous piece of artwork for the cab of the truck. The storage boxes were created with expectations that the artwork assembled would have the hills continue through the front, sides, and backs of the boxes. The boxes had the wrap, bleed and wrap around the doors in hopes for a seamless look. The text was all printed with bleed, cut, and laminated for install as we found it to be much easier to manipulate their placements pending on how the hills and gnome character would be placed. Similarly, the gnome underwent the same process to ensure that he was placed in the right areas too and allow enough breathing room for the text and background at install.
Needless to say, that not every vehicle is built to be exactly the same inside and out. Luckily, I had the opportunity to work with a skilled team to knock this design out of the park. I had the opportunity to personally see this truck drive around my area of town a handful of times which gave me the opportunity to show off and impress my kids.
